Spool prefabrication in the workshop: Optimize cutting and beveling for series production

In workshops dedicated to spool prefabrication, the operational priority is the preparation of edges to be welded with a high level of accuracy and perfectly repeatable. GBC covers this need through three families of machines: the SB320, SB500 and SB600 stationary pipe beveling machines for series beveling with a fixed bench, the portable pipe cutters and pipe bevelers for the most varied processes, and the plate bevelers for the beveling of components made from sheet metal.

What the prefabrication workshop asks for the preparation of the flaps

A spool represents a section of pipe prefabricated in the workshop and subsequently installed directly in the plant, a process in which the activities are repeated with strict regularity: pipes cut to size, beveled edges and fittings or flanges ready for connection. In the regulatory framework, the ASME B31.3 standard regulates process piping for refineries, chemical, pharmaceutical, hydrogen supply chain plants and cryogenic systems, covering the entire process from design to fabrication to testing. In parallel, the ASME B16.25 standard defines the geometric requirements for the preparation of butt weld ends of piping components, specifying precisely bevel angles, dimensions and related machining tolerances.

The edges must be prepared with constant uniformity and be immediately ready for subsequent welding operations. For this reason, GBC edge preparation machines are designed to ensure perfect repeatability of machining from one piece to another, both in portable and fixed bench configurations. The GBC range of pipe beveling machines integrates fully with pipe cutters and bevelers, offering total coverage for the entire preparation line.

GBC stationary pipe cutters: SB320, SB500 and SB600 for series production

When the volume of flaps to be prepared is high, the fixed workstation becomes an indispensable choice for optimizing the production flow: the tube is loaded, the machine performs the machining cycle and the operator can immediately devote himself to the next piece. Specifically designed to withstand continuous and heavy-duty cycles, GBC stationary machines integrate a self-centering and anti-strain clamping vice, combined with an efficient lubrication and coolant recirculation system that guarantees maximum tool life and constant cleaning of the cutting area.

SB320 for small and medium diameters

The SB320 processes pipes with an external diameter between 33 and 320 mm (from 1 1/2″ to 12 3/4″). The integrated electronic panel on the machine allows the management of all processing phases in a fully automatic cycle, while the vice independently calibrates the clamping force and an automatic device takes care of the correct positioning of the pipe. The spindle is designed to house both plate tools and high-speed steel (HSS) tools, and there is an automatic lubrication system on board. This is the GBC stationary solution developed for the beveling of pipes in series.

SB500 for pipes up to 20 inches

The SB500 covers external diameters between 114 and 508 mm (from 4″ to 20″), proving to be effective even on high thicknesses and particularly tough materials. It is a semi-automatic, robust and easy-to-use pipe milling machine: the integrated panel allows you to adjust the spindle speed, the general feed and the movement of the moving head, while the dedicated pump ensures the continuous recirculation of the coolant. It can use both solid tools and tools with insertable plates. For workshops that frequently manage the machining of pipe blanks or stubs, the SB500 guarantees a significant increase in operating speed.

SB600 for larger diameters

The SB600 covers diameters from 254 mm (10″) up to 609.6 mm (24″). It performs internal and external beveling, facing and tapering on carbon, stainless steel, duplex, Inconel and other special alloys. Operating speed is its main strength, particularly on moderate thicknesses, while maintaining high performance even on large thicknesses and tough materials. The panel on the machine allows you to adjust the feed and speed of the spindle, designed to accommodate both plate tools and HSS tools, while the coolant recirculation system preserves the life of the tool over time.

Portable machines in the workshop: pipe cutters and pipe cutters for small diameter pipes and non-standard jobs

A fixed workstation alone does not meet all the operational needs of a department. When it is necessary to handle small diameter pipes, single pieces or non-standard machining, portable machines offer maximum versatility by allowing the operator to intervene directly on the pipe.

Among the portable pipe cutters, the Boiler 1-4 K operates on internal diameters from 23 to 108 mm performing counterboring and beveling operations. Ideal for prefabrication activities, it is available in pneumatic, electric and battery-powered configurations, and integrates a depth sensor that guarantees homogeneous and precise serial machining. As far as pipe cutters are concerned, the PIPE 6 cold-cuts pipes from 23 to 170 mm with thicknesses up to 11 mm, while simultaneously beveling at various angles using dedicated cutters. For larger diameters, GBC’s line of pipe cutters offers cutting and beveling solutions such as the MCA Cutter, the FAST and the Supercutter.

Within a prefabrication department, these two types of systems complement each other: stationary machines guarantee maximum efficiency in serial flaps, while portable solutions offer the necessary flexibility for special and differentiated processes according to project specifications.

Sheet metal beveling for components made from sheet metal

When the workflow also includes preparing for welding of sheet metal components, GBC plate beveling machines are the ideal complement. The Basic Edge 50 processes thicknesses between 6 and 60 mm with adjustable bevel angles from 10° to 70° and an automatic feed system, making it perfect for high-productivity workshops and intensive manufacturing regimes. For higher thicknesses, up to 120 mm, the range offers the Edge 80, capable of performing J-bevels at angles from 0° to 30°, and the Multiedge 80, which adds the ability to perform J-bevels, facing and deplating to the machining.

Repeatability, speed and practicality: what matters in the choice

For prefabrication workshops, three fundamental evaluation criteria are of particular importance. The first is repeatability, so that each flap must be identical to the previous one. On the stationary SB series, the self-centering and anti-deformation vice ensures that each tube is clamped with the same precision. The second criterion is the speed of execution of the bevels, whose optimized cycle times accumulate productivity advantages piece after piece in series production. The third is ease of use, with the SB series machines being managed directly from the integrated control panel on the machine.

For structures that require a complete operating package, complementary accessories such as pipe clamps and pipe stands can be added to the main machine, which are usually purchased separately.

  • Stationary (SB320, SB500, SB600): beveling in series on tubes with a fixed bench, cycle managed by the panel.
  • Portable (Boiler 1-4 K, pipe cutter): small, medium and large diameters, portability.
  • Plate bevelers: edges of sheets and plates for accessory components.

A range for the entire department: where to learn more and how to contact GBC

For a prefabrication workshop, the GBC range offers the possibility of strategically combining a stationary machine for mass production, a portable machine for the most varied jobs and, where required, a plate beveling machine for sheet metal components. All the solutions described are developed with the aim of returning high-precision edges, immediately ready for subsequent welding operations. From the stationary units of the SB series to the portable models, the GBC technical team works alongside the customer to identify the most suitable equipment for the specific mix of machining operations in the department.
