In refineries and in the petrochemical sector, pipe cutting and beveling operations are generally carried out with cold work machines, so as to be able to intervene on the process lines without generating heat input on the material. For this context, GBC offers the entire range of pipe cutters, identifying the Supercutter<\/strong>, MCA Cutter<\/strong> and FAST<\/strong> models as the main points of reference: together they cover a wide range of diameters and offer different assembly methods, adapting to scheduled stops, spool prefabrication and maintenance interventions on existing lines.<\/em><\/p>\n

Because pipe preparation is a critical operation in the refining and petrochemical industries.<\/h2>\n

Process piping in a refinery or petrochemical plant follows design codes established by the country of installation and the customer’s specifications. The two main references are ASME B31.3<\/em>, the American code for process piping<\/em>, and EN 13480<\/em>, the European standard on industrial metal piping harmonized with the PED Directive (2014\/68\/EU). Although the structure and some calculation criteria differ, the basic principle on the joint remains unchanged: the pipe must arrive at the welding stage with a well-defined bevel geometry<\/strong>, which is codified by ASME B16.25 <\/em>for butt weld ends and by EN ISO 9692-1<\/em> for joint preparations. Both the quality of the weld and the outcome of the non-destructive testing depend on the accuracy of the cut and chamfer. The same rigor applies to lines in operation: when it is necessary to replace a section during a stop, the intervention complies with the inspection and repair criteria in force (such as API 570<\/em>), requiring a preparation of the joint completely identical to that of the first construction.<\/p>\n

This involves operating in extremely short time contexts, typical of scheduled stops (turnarounds<\/em>), where each cutting, beveling and pressure restoration activity has a contracted operating window. GBC cold cutting machines<\/strong> are specifically designed for these needs: they perform the cutting and preparation of the joint in a single pass, without generating heat-affected zones (HAZ) and without having to interrupt the processes for cooling the material.<\/p>\n

Supercutter, MCA Cutter and FAST: the range of pipe cutters for plants in the sector<\/h2>\n

For cutting and chamfering operations in the petrochemical and refining sectors, GBC mainly offers its own, identifying the Supercutter<\/strong>, MCA Cutter<\/strong> and FAST<\/strong> models as the main references in the sector. While sharing the cold working technology for simultaneous cutting and beveling, the three machines differ in how they are fixed to the pipe, diameter range covered and construction structure.<\/p>\n

The Supercutter<\/a> is a clamshell<\/em> type machine, whose frame hinges around the pipe without separating into two parts; it covers a range of diameters from 168 to 1530 mm (6″-60″). The MCA Cutter, <\/a>\u00a0on the other hand, is a split-frame solution, i.e. it can be divided into two distinct halves for easy mounting on pipes already in place, offering an extended range towards smaller diameters (from 33.4 to 1095 mm). The FAST<\/a> is also with a split-frame structure but stands out for being the only pipe cutter in the GBC range equipped with an integrated self-centering<\/strong> system. It can also handle diameters between 153 and 1545 mm<\/p>\n

The difference between split-frame and clamshell therefore lies in the way they are opened and mounted on the tube, not in the type of processing: in fact, all three machines perform cutting and beveling<\/strong>, even at the same time. As a result, the choice of model is mainly driven by the manoeuvring space, the diameter of the line and the assembly needs on site, rather than by a specific sector preference.<\/p>\n

The use of three distinct models, rather than a single machine, responds to a concrete need on the construction site: in a petrochemical plant, in fact, small diameter lines for auxiliary services and main manifolds greater than one meter coexist, often located in contexts with extremely heterogeneous accesses. Added to this operational flexibility is the choice of construction materials, with the Supercutter and FAST made of high-strength metal for maximum strength and the MCA Cutter structured in aluminum to ensure maximum maneuverability. Having both the clamshell mounting system of the Supercutter and the split-frame of MCA Cutter and FAST available allows you to select, section by section, the fastest and most effective coupling method, without having to disassemble the lines or change the layout of pipes already laid. This is a decisive aspect especially during turnarounds<\/em>, when the positioning and set-up times of the machine significantly affect the overall timing of the intervention.<\/p>\n

Pneumatic, hydraulic, electric or brushless power supply<\/h2>\n

For refining and petrochemical plants, GBC usually offers cutting and chamfering machines with pneumatic feeding<\/strong>, which is the most requested configuration in this area. However, the range of tube cutters offers a strong motor flexibility to adapt their use to the energy sources available in the specific work area: the MCA Cutter is available in pneumatic, electric, hydraulic and brushless versions, while Supercutter and FAST can be configured with pneumatic, hydraulic or brushless motorization, and with electric motor for operating capacities up to 36 inches in diameter.<\/p>\n

When the line exceeds the operating capacity of the three main models, GBC offers the Hypercutter<\/a>, a machine with hydraulic power supply capable of handling diameters between 1524 and 2540 mm <\/strong>(60″-100″). The openable frame allows it to be installed anywhere in the pipeline, while the integrated copying system effectively compensates for any ovalization or irregularities of the pipe. The selection of the most suitable model and motorization is defined in close collaboration with GBC technicians, specifically analyzing all the parameters of the intervention: diameter, wall thickness and conditions of access to the pipe.<\/p>\n

Special machining and cladding: verifying feasibility with GBC<\/h2>\n

Petrochemical plants and refineries frequently operate with pipes that go beyond the most common dimensional standards or materials, such as pipes with cladding (corrosion-resistant coating), high thicknesses or diameters beyond the typical catalog ranges. In these situations, the most efficient solution is to submit the need directly to the GBC technical service<\/a>: the company is in fact able to satisfy all the processes required for these critical applications, defining the configuration of the machine on a case-by-case basis according to the material, thickness and diameter involved.<\/p>\n

In addition to pipe cutters, the petrochemical industry frequently needs preparation on sheet metal edges, as well as in fabrication and maintenance work on tanks, storage tanks and pressure vessels.
