The first criterion for choosing the machine is <strong>the type of clamping<\/strong>: internal in most tube sheets, external on flat plates with parallel tubes, where the tube protrudes just enough for a stable hook from the outside. Once the family has been defined, the model is chosen on the diameter of the tubes, the space available on the plate, the number of tubes to be processed and the material of the bundle. GBC Industrial Tools manufactures internal and external locking pipe bevelers for all these conditions.<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Why the tube bundle is the most delicate point of maintenance<\/h2>\n<p>In a shell and tube heat exchanger, the joint between the tube and tube sheet is one of the most critical elements of the entire component. The reference standard for the mechanical design of these exchangers is the one developed by <strong>TEMA<\/strong> (Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association), the association of manufacturers in the sector with standards widely adopted worldwide. The joint can be made by mechanical expansion of the tube, by welding or by a combined method. The technical literature reports porosity, lack of melting or penetration and shrinkage cracks, often linked to a embrittlement of the area heat-affected by welding, among the most frequent processing defects.<\/p>\n<p>This explains why <strong>the mechanical preparation of the joint<\/strong> is as important as the weld itself. Cold, repeatable working without uncontrolled heat input reduces the risk of introducing precisely those defects that make the most stressed point of the exchanger fragile. This is the task that <a href=\"https:\/\/gbcspa.com\/en\/product-category\/pipe-bevelers\/\">\u00a0GBC pipe<\/a> beveling machines perform, designed to head and chamfer the tube before welding without altering its metallurgy.<\/p>\n<h2>The processes required on a tube bundle<\/h2>\n<p>Those who deal with maintenance on a heat exchanger, in a thermal power plant, in a refinery or in a chemical plant, almost always face the same set of interventions on the tube sheet. The first is the<strong> facing of the bundle<\/strong>: the pipe must be cut and finished exactly at surface level, without leaving protrusions that compromise the seal or the subsequent coupling. The second is the <strong>bevel for tube-plate welding<\/strong>, the geometry that prepares the joint to receive the bead according to the indications of the project.<\/p>\n<p>The other two processes occur when a tube needs to be replaced. After the extraction of the damaged tube, the seat on the plate must be taken back to return a clean coupling surface to the new tube: this is the <strong>recovery after extraction<\/strong>. When, on the other hand, the tube must first be removed,<strong> the tube and the existing weld must be removed<\/strong>, to completely free the seat before proceeding with the restoration. These four processes define the perimeter of the intervention on a tube bundle, and it is on these that the choice of the machine must be sized.<\/p>\n<h2>Internal or external locking: the first criterion of choice<\/h2>\n<p>The first question that arises when choosing the machine for a tube sheet operation concerns the way in which it attaches to the tube itself. There are two approaches: <strong>the internal locking<\/strong>, which locks the machine inside the internal diameter of the tube, and the <strong>external locking<\/strong>, which locks it on the external diameter protruding from the plate.<\/p>\n<p>In practice, on the most common tubesheets, the tubes do not protrude sufficiently from the plate to allow a solid external locking. For this reason, in the vast majority of cases, internally locking machines are chosen: this is the criterion that GBC applies when it receives a request of this type, and which in commercial practice covers <em>about 90%<\/em> of situations. External locking machines remain the correct solution for flat tube sheets, with tubes arranged in parallel, where the tube protrudes just enough to ensure a stable hook from the outside without intervening on the internal surface.<\/p>\n<h2>GBC machines for tube sheet milling<\/h2>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_6351\" style=\"width: 592px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6351\" class=\"wp-image-6351 size-medium img-fluid \" src=\"https:\/\/gbcspa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/01_3430-582x455.webp\" alt=\"MINI K portable pipe beveler\" width=\"582\"\/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6351\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">MINI K portable pipe beveler<\/p><\/div> <\/center><\/p>\n<p>The clamping type splits the GBC range in two for shell and tube work.<\/p>\n<p>For <strong>internal clamping<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/gbcspa.com\/en\/product\/mini-k\/\">MINI K<\/a> works on internal diameters <strong>from 20 to 42 mm<\/strong> (reducible up to 12.4 mm with optional shafts), chamfers and trimming, and is available in pneumatic, electric or battery-powered versions. It is suitable for boiler tubes, heat exchangers and field installations, with optional curved shafts useful when the intervention concerns bends or T-joints close to the plate. On the same diameter range, the range is divided into three variants: the <a href=\"https:\/\/gbcspa.com\/en\/product\/mini-k-lever\/\">MINI K LEVER<\/a> with lever-operated feed, the <a href=\"https:\/\/gbcspa.com\/en\/product\/mini-c40\/\">MINI C40<\/a> with a footprint of only 40 mm on tubes <strong>with an internal diameter of 20 to 39 mm<\/strong> , and the <a href=\"https:\/\/gbcspa.com\/en\/product\/mini-auto-compact\/\">MINI AUTO COMPACT<\/a> with adjustable automatic feed and limit switch sensor. On larger diameters, <strong>from 28 to 76 mm<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/gbcspa.com\/en\/product\/boiler-k\/\">Boiler K<\/a> covers the same internal locking logic with a spindle with 4 tool positions, designed for field interventions on power plants and refineries as well as for the preparation of heat exchangers in confined spaces.<\/p>\n<p><center><br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_4586\" style=\"width: 592px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"582\" height=\"455\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4586\" class=\"wp-image-4586 size-medium img-fluid \" src=\"https:\/\/gbcspa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/TC40-582x455.webp\" alt=\"TC40 portable beveler\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4586\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">TC40 portable beveler<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>For <strong>external clamping<\/strong>, reserved for flat plates with parallel tubes, GBC offers the <a href=\"https:\/\/gbcspa.com\/en\/product\/tc40\/\">TC40<\/a> (external diameter 10-48.3 mm) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/gbcspa.com\/en\/product\/tc73\/\">TC73<\/a> (external diameter 10.3-73 mm). Both are specifically designed to fit into tube sheet windows during repair, construction or joining, with interchangeable jaws to adapt to different diameters and handwheel feed for precise control of the processing depth. The <a href=\"https:\/\/gbcspa.com\/en\/product\/mini-k-od\/\">MINI K OD, <\/a>with external self-centering three-point locking on diameters from 10 to 60 mm, completes the range when it is necessary <strong>to fully preserve the internal surface of the tube<\/strong>, a condition also typical of some repairs on the tube sheet as well as medical and food applications.<\/p>\n<h2>From type to model: diameter, space, number of pipes, power supply<\/h2>\n<p>The lock indicates the type, not yet the machine to be taken to the construction site: inside each of the two types there are several models, and to separate them there are four pieces of information on the tube bundle.<\/p>\n<h3>The diameter of the pipes<\/h3>\n<p>Each pipe beveler covers a <strong>defined diameter range<\/strong>, and the range can be read on the internal diameter for internal locking machines, on the external diameter for external locking machines. On tube bundles, the useful range is that of the Mini, TC and Boiler series: it ranges from 10 mm in external diameter of the TC40 to 76 mm in internal diameter of the Boiler K. Below 20 mm in internal diameter you need the optional reduced shafts, which on the MINI K bring the working range up to 12.4 mm. The <a href=\"https:\/\/gbcspa.com\/en\/product-category\/pipe-bevelers\/\">\u00a0GBC pipe beveling machine range<\/a> as a whole goes up to 1016 mm, but those diameters belong to other areas, not to the tube sheet.<\/p>\n<h3>The space available on the plate<\/h3>\n<p>On a tube bundle, the constraint is almost never the power, but <strong>the size<\/strong>: the pitch between the tubes, the proximity to the shell and the depth of the chamber limit the machine that can be positioned. This is the condition for which the <u>MINI C40<\/u> was born, with its 40 mm footprint, indicated by the product sheet for tube walls and heat exchangers. The TC series external locking machines, on the other hand, are designed to enter the windows of tubesheets during repair, construction or jointing. When the intervention concerns bends or T-joints close to the plate, the optional curved shafts of <u>MINI K<\/u> and <u>Boiler K<\/u> solve the access.<\/p>\n<h3>The number of tubes to be processed<\/h3>\n<p>In a tube bundle, the same process is repeated on dozens or hundreds of locations, and what matters is the cycle time per tube. Here the difference can be made by the two Mini variants designed for serial work. The <u>MINI K LEVER,<\/u> with the lever feed that shortens the work cycle, is suitable for serial machining on boiler pipes, exchangers and on-site sketching. The <u>MINI AUTO COMPACT<\/u> is intended by the product sheet for mass processing on large heat exchangers, for precision counterboring of the tube bundle, the removal of weld seams and the preparation of the plate: automatic feed and limit switch sensor make the depth repeatable tube after tube, without depending on the operator&#8217;s hand. MINI K, MINI K LEVER, MINI C40 and Boiler K exist in pneumatic, electric or battery-powered versions; the MINI AUTO COMPACT is pneumatic, with automatic pneumatic locking also available as an option on the MINI K LEVER. On a plant shutdown where the air network is isolated, or on a chamber that can only be reached with long pipes, the battery-powered version avoids having to equip the working point before even starting.<\/p>\n<h2>How important is the material of the tube bundle?<\/h2>\n<p>The tube bundles that arrive for maintenance are made of the most diverse materials: carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex, inconel, copper and cupronickel, titanium. <u>\u00a0<\/u><a href=\"https:\/\/gbcspa.com\/en\/product-category\/pipe-bevelers\/\">GBC pipe bevelers<\/a> are able to deal with them without problems thanks to a wide choice of <a href=\"https:\/\/gbcspa.com\/en\/tools\/\">customizable tools<\/a>, while the machine remains the same regardless of the alloy of the bundle.<\/p>\n<p>The material enters the choice at another level: the tool changes and the processing parameters change, not the machine.
