This biphasic structure provides superior mechanical strength to standard austenitics and high resistance to chloride stress corrosion. Mechanical cold cutting is the recommended technology to preserve these properties: it requires carbide tools coated with specific geometries and a strict control of the process temperature.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>What are duplex and super duplex steels<\/h2>\n<p>Duplex stainless steels are named after the metallurgical structure: a biphasic matrix composed of austenitous<em> ferritein in approximately<\/em> equal<em> proportions<\/em> (40-60% each). This combination is achieved through precise chemical formulation and controlled heat treatment and underlies the properties that distinguish them from both standard austenitic steels and nickel superalloys.<\/p>\n<p>The most popular reference grade is <strong>duplex 2205<\/strong> (UNS S32205\/S31803): 22-23% chromium, 3-3.5% molybdenum, 4.5-6.5% nickel. The minimum tensile strength varies between 620 and 690 MPa depending on the semi-finished product (pipes or sheets\/bars), with a minimum yield strength of 450 MPa.<\/p>\n<p>The<strong> super duplex 2507<\/strong>(UNS S32750) takes features to a higher level: 25% chromium, 4% molybdenum, 6-8% nickel, with addition of nitrogen to stabilize the austenitic phase. The minimum tensile strength rises to 800 MPa, with a minimum yield strength of 550 MPa. The PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) parameter, calculated with %Cr + 3,3x(%Mo + 0.5%W) + 16%N, reaches values above 40 (typically 42-45), compared to 34-36 for duplex 2205 and 22-26 for AISI 316L.<\/p>\n<h2>Duplex, standard stainless steel and Inconel: three distinct families<\/h2>\n<p>Duplexes and super duplexes are<strong> iron-based<\/strong> <strong>steels<\/strong>, not nickel superalloys. The nickel content ranges between 4.5 and 8%, enough to stabilize the austenitic phase, but far from 50-72% of Inconel and Hastelloy. This distinction is essential to understand the positioning of these materials compared to other special alloys.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to AISI 316L, duplexes offer approximately double mechanical strength and superior resistance to chloride stress corrosion: the biphasic structure reduces susceptibility to pure austenitic SCC by combining the lower reactivity of the ferritic phase with the toughness of austenite. The price is higher than common stainless steels, but significantly lower than Inconel. Compared to the latter, the duplexes give way to high temperatures: maximum operating temperature in continuous between 250 and 280 degrees C. The 2507 is qualified NACE MR0175\/ISO 15156 for H2S environments.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Desalination<\/strong>: high pressure pipes, vessels and structural components of SWRO plants, where the concentration of chlorides imposes maximum resistance to pitting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chemical and petrochemical<\/strong>: reactors, heat exchangers and tanks for acid and chlorine solutions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shipbuilding<\/strong>: propeller trees, underwater appendages and structures exposed to galvanic currents and biofouling.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Energy production: <\/strong>flue gas desulfurization (FGD) plants and flue gas treatment systems with high chloride concentrations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The challenges in cold cutting and blunting<\/h2>\n<p>The biphasic structure that gives duplex its qualities is also the source of the main processing difficulties. Those who work with standard austenitic steels and approach duplex for the first time immediately notice three substantial differences.<\/p>\n<h3>Accelerated incrustance<\/h3>\n<p>The duplex crusts rapidly during machining. Both phases &#8211; austenitic and ferritic &#8211; increase local hardness through mechanisms of plastic deformation, progressively increasing the shear forces with each pass of the tool. This requires constant progress without interruptions, always sharp inserts and optimized cutting parameters so as not to aggravate the entanglement between one step and the next.<\/p>\n<h3>Thermal management: two phenomena to avoid<\/h3>\n<p>Temperature control in the cutting zone is critical for two distinct reasons. The first phenomenon is <strong>the fragilization at 475<\/strong><strong> degrees C: if the<\/strong> cutting zone exceeds 300 degrees C in a prolonged way, the ferritic phase can undergo a progressive deterioration of the toughness. The second phenomenon is the <strong>precipitation<\/strong><strong> of the sigma phase, a<\/strong> hard and brittle intermetallic compound that forms in the range 600-900 degrees C: it locally depletes the chromium and molybdenum alloy, reducing corrosion resistance in the affected areas. Mechanical cold cutting &#8211; with adequate refrigeration and controlled feed speeds &#8211; is the right response to keep both risks under control.<\/p>\n<h3>Tool wear<\/h3>\n<p>The high chromium and molybdenum content makes duplexes physically abrasive. The combination of rapid hardening and abrasiveness of the material accelerates the wear of inserts on the side and cutting edge, especially in the absence of suitable coatings. Unsuitable tools impair the quality of cutting, extend blunting tolerances and increase production costs.<\/p>\n<h2>Tools and solutions for cutting and beveling duplex<\/h2>\n<p>There are several technologies available for cutting and beveling pipes and sheets in duplex and super duplex: plasma, laser, waterjet and mechanical cold cutting. Plasma and lasers generate high heat in the cutting zone, exceeding the thresholds that activate the precipitation of the sigma phase (600-900 degrees C) and the fragilization at 475 degrees C &#8211; phenomena that compromise biphasic structure and corrosion resistance. Mechanical cold cutting does not introduce significant heat and preserves intact material properties: it is the<strong> recommended technology for these steels.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In mechanical cold cutting, there are no machines dedicated exclusively to duplex: the difference is made by the tools and their coatings. <strong>Tungsten carbide coated with<\/strong> TiCN is the standard choice: positive geometry, sharpened cuts, lower cutting speeds compared to standard austenitic steels to keep temperatures under control and limit progressive incrustment.<\/p>\n<p>On all GBC machines it is possible to mount different tools without intervening on the machine itself.
